Habonim Dror Press Release: February 6, 2001

Despite the disappointment amongst left wing constituencies, the results of the February 6th election confirm Israel’s commitment to the democratic process.  Though the voter turnout rate was the lowest in Israeli history this does not suggest electoral apathy, rather a rejection of the candidates as well as anxiety about the security of the state during this most recent Palestinian uprising.

Habonim Dror hopes that the coalition assembled by Ariel Sharon will reflect the continued Israeli support for the peace process.  A majority of Israelis still support the creation of a Palestinian State (64%) and the dismantlement of some settlements.  A large minority (44%) continues to support the discussion on the status of Jerusalem.  We hope that Sharon hears this overwhelming voice of peace and his appointment to the office of Prime Minister softens the hard line he often presented during his campaign.

We desperately hope that Sharon honors past Israeli commitments to the peace process and forges a new road ahead based not on fear, cynicism and belligerence but on a true desire to seek a just compromise with Israel’s Palestinian neighbors.  Sharon ran on a platform of peace and has won a mandate to pursue these ideals.  We will support him in any endeavor that truly furthers the cause of peace and reconciliation in the region.
