Gap No Good?
By: Jamie Levin
What are you wearing right
now? Your shirt, could it contribute to
oppression? Your shoes, was the worker
who sewed them together paid a living wage?
Your pants, were they produced in a unionized factory where workers rights
are a priority? These are questions
that all chaverim must ponder.
Two weeks ago a Habonim Dror
contingent was on hand at an anti-Gap protest in New York City. A loose coalition of high school students
and labour activists have galvanized forces against the poor practices of Gap
clothing production. According to
sources on hand, many
Gap products are sewn in Saipan; thanks to U.S.
imperialistic policies these products can be proudly labeled ‘made in the
United States’ while no American labour laws need apply. In these factories abuse is rife and workers
(largely female) are denied living wages.
A mass of vibrant protesters
stood outside a Manhattan Gap store to demand better conditions for foreign
workers.
Habonim Dror stands in solidarity with workers who stand up to
capitalist oppression!
