Gap No Good?

What are you wearing right now?  Your shirt, could it contribute to oppression?  Your shoes, was the worker who sewed them together paid a living wage?  Your pants, were they produced in a unionized factory where workers rights are a priority?  These are questions that all chaverim must ponder.

           

Two weeks ago a Habonim Dror contingent was on hand at an anti-Gap protest in New York City.  A loose coalition of high school students and labour activists have galvanized forces against the poor practices of Gap clothing production.  According to sources on hand, many

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Gap products are sewn in Saipan; thanks to U.S. imperialistic policies these products can be proudly labeled ‘made in the United States’ while no American labour laws need apply.  In these factories abuse is rife and workers (largely female) are denied living wages.

 

A mass of vibrant protesters stood outside a Manhattan Gap store to demand better conditions for foreign workers.
